🍁 Express Entry & French
French-language proficiency is currently one of the strongest levers in Express Entry — a straightforward CRS bonus, plus eligibility for category draws that have had the lowest cutoffs of any draw type in 2026.

If you reach NCLC 7 or higher in all four French skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking — via TCF Canada or TEF Canada), you qualify for a bonus:

French-language proficiency draws are the second-largest source of Express Entry invitations in 2026, behind only the Canadian Experience Class — and they've had the lowest CRS cutoffs of any draw type all year, including the single largest category-based draw in Express Entry history (8,500 invitations on February 6, 2026, at a CRS cutoff of 400).
| Category | Draws (2026, to date) | Approx. ITAs | Typical CRS cutoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canadian Experience Class (CEC) | 17 | ≈55,250 | 500+ |
| French-language proficiency | 10 | ≈50,500 | 393–435 |
| Healthcare and social services | 3 | ≈11,500 | varies |
| Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) | 19 | ≈9,270 | 600+ |

Beyond Express Entry, Canada's 2026–2028 Immigration Levels Plan sets rising targets for French-speaking permanent resident admissions outside Quebec, on a path to a committed 12% target by 2029:
| Year | Target (% of admissions outside Quebec) | Approx. admissions |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 9% | ≈30,267 |
| 2027 | 9.5% | ≈31,825 |
| 2028 | 10.5% | ≈35,175 |

Up to 50 points: 25 points if you have NCLC 7+ in all four French skills with English at CLB 4 or lower (or no English test), or 50 points if you additionally have CLB 5+ in all four English skills. Source: canada.ca.
French-language category draws target a smaller, specific pool (candidates with NCLC 7+ in French), so IRCC can invite deep into that pool at a lower CRS cutoff than general or CEC draws, which pull from the entire Express Entry pool.
For many candidates, yes — reaching NCLC 7 in French can add up to 50 points and also makes you eligible for French-language category draws with historically lower cutoffs. But it depends on your starting French level and timeline; this is general information, not personalized immigration advice.
