Colors & Basic Descriptions
Describe objects with colors and simple adjectives: with pronunciation for each.
COLOUR ADJECTIVES: colours are adjectives and must agree in gender and number like any other adjective: add -E for feminine when the word doesn't already end in -E, as in un chat noir (a black cat) → une voiture noire (a black car) below. You'll learn the full agreement system (doubling, irregular feminines) and adjective position later in A1
SIMPLE COLORS (agree normally): rouge (red), bleu (blue), vert (green), jaune (yellow), noir (black), rose (pink), beige (beige): un chat noir (a black cat) · une voiture noire (a black car)
Common mistake: saying 'une rouge robe': adjectives of color go AFTER: une robe rouge (a red dress)
- un chat noir — a black cat (m.sg)
- une voiture noire — a black car (f.sg)
- une robe verte — a green dress (f.sg: t heard)
- des chats noirs — black cats (m.pl)
