Les émotions et les sensations (Feelings & Expressions)

Express how you feel using avoir expressions, se sentir, and avoir l'air + adjective.

AVOIR EXPRESSIONS FOR PHYSICAL SENSATIONS: French uses AVOIR where English uses 'to be'

THE GOLDEN RULE: these sensations are described as things you 'HAVE', not things you 'ARE'

j'ai faim (I'm hungry). j'ai froid (I'm cold). j'ai peur (I'm afraid) (de). j'ai sommeil (I'm sleepy). j'ai honte (I'm ashamed)

j'ai mal (à) = I'm in pain / it hurts: j'ai mal à la tête (I have a headache), j'ai mal au ventre (I have a stomachache), j'ai mal aux dents (I have a toothache), j'ai mal partout (I hurt all over).

j'ai envie de (I feel like): J'ai envie de dormir. (I feel like sleeping.)

WITH ÊTRE for emotional state: Je suis content. (I'm happy. (m)) · Je suis contente. (I'm happy. (f)) · Je suis triste. (I'm sad.) These emotional STATES use être because they are adjectives.

THE DISTINCTION: AVOIR = physical sensations (hunger, thirst, pain, fear) + fixed expressions. ÊTRE = emotional/psychological states described by adjectives (happy, sad, tired, angry)

Common mistake: 'Je suis faim': WRONG. It's always J'ai faim. (I'm hungry.)

AVOIR MAL À + BODY PART: see Le corps et la santé #3 for the full avoir-mal-à system (contractions, body parts vocabulary, severity, at the doctor, illness expressions, common mistakes)
