Quel temps fait-il ? (Weather & Seasons)
Talk about weather using impersonal verbs, describe the seasons, and connect weather to activities.
WEATHER EXPRESSIONS: three main structures
STRUCTURE 1: IL FAIT + adjective or noun: il fait beau (it's nice), il fait mauvais (it's bad weather), il fait chaud (it's hot), il fait froid (it's cold), il fait bon (it's mild), il fait nuit (it's dark). These use FAIRE. Sun and wind can also go here: il fait du soleil (it's sunny), il fait du vent (it's windy) — this is the form used in this unit's word table
STRUCTURE 2: IL Y A + noun: il y a du soleil (it's sunny), il y a du vent (it's windy), il y a du brouillard (it's foggy), il y a de la neige (there is snow), il y a des nuages (it's cloudy), il y a des orages (there are storms), il y a du verglas (there is black ice) (il fait du verglas is also heard). Both structures are correct for sun/wind; French speakers use both
STRUCTURE 3: IL + verb: il pleut (it's raining) (from pleuvoir), il neige (it's snowing) (from neiger), il gèle (it's freezing) (from geler), il grêle (it's hailing) (from grêler)
TEMPERATURE: il fait + degrees + degrés: Il fait 20 degrés (it is 20 degrees) (It's 20°). Il fait moins dix (it's minus ten) (It's -10°). Quelle est la température ? (What is the temperature?)
Common mistake: 'Il fait du pluie': pluie uses IL PLEUT, not il fait: 'Il pleut'
Common mistake: 'Il fait des nuages': clouds use IL Y A: 'Il y a des nuages'
- Il fait très beau aujourd'hui ! Le ciel est bleu et il fait du soleil. — It's very nice today! The sky is blue and it's sunny.
- Il pleut et il fait du vent. N'oublie pas ton parapluie ! — It's raining and it's windy. Don't forget your umbrella!
- En hiver, il gèle souvent le matin et il y a du brouillard. — In winter, it often freezes in the morning and there is fog.
- Il y a un orage ce soir. Il y a des éclairs et on entend le tonnerre. — There is a storm tonight. There is lightning and you can hear the thunder.
