DE CONTRACTIONS WITH PLACE PREPOSITIONS

Many place prepositions use DE as part of them: à côté DE, en face DE, près DE, loin DE, au-dessus DE, etc.

When DE meets a MASCULINE SINGULAR noun with LE: DE + LE = DU: à côté du café (next to the café) · en face du cinéma (opposite the cinema) · près du parc (near the park) · loin du bureau (far from the office)

When DE meets plural with LES: DE + LES = DES: à côté des magasins (next to the shops) · en face des écoles (opposite the schools) · près des transports (near the transport)

NO CONTRACTION with LA or L': à côté de la banque (next to the bank) · en face de l'hôtel (opposite the hotel) · près de l'école (near the school)

Common mistake: 'près du école': l'école starts with a vowel so no contraction. Correct: près de l'école (near the school)
