Official letters (giving notice on a flat, cancelling a contract) are usually sent « en recommandé avec AR ».
If you miss a delivery, the postman leaves an avis de passage: bring it with your ID to collect the parcel.
Many services, including registered letters, can also be done online on laposte.fr.
